Petula … and Songs of Love is a one-off BBC Two special built around themes of romance, memory and emotional storytelling. Created to coincide with the release of Petula’s 1978 album Destiny, the programme blends new material with classic repertoire, all staged with the warmth and polish characteristic of Yvonne Littlewood’s productions. Moving between intimate studio performances, a nostalgic music-hall sequence and more dramatic set-pieces, the special showcases Peter Knight’s rich orchestral arrangements and Petula’s late-70s artistic confidence. The musicians-in-vision moments add a sense of immediacy, while the music-hall medley highlights her versatility, and the stillness of Don’t Cry for Me Argentina provides one of the programme’s emotional peaks. As a standalone production, it forms a natural bridge between the theatricality of her 1974 series and the more album-focused television work that followed later.

The special also features three of Petula’s own compositions from the Destiny album “What Am I Doing Here,” “Sunbeam,” and “You’re My Destiny” giving the programme a direct link to her songwriting during this period.

Although modest in scale, Petula ...and Songs of Love offers a clear sense of how the production was shaped in the studio. Petula moves through a series of self-contained sequences, each with its own visual identity from the period staging of the music-hall section to the more contemporary settings used for the Destiny material. Occasional costume changes and simple camera techniques help mark these transitions, while the musicians-in-vision moments underline the programme’s live studio character. The later numbers introduce a more dramatic tone, including the still, focused staging of Don’t Cry for Me Argentina, before the programme returns to lighter material for its close. Taken together, Petula ...and Songs of Love provides a concise snapshot of Petula’s television work in the late 1970s and the production style typical of BBC variety at the time.
