The Sound of Petula: 1974 Episode Guide
In
1974, Petula Clark returned to BBC Television at the heart of
the Saturday evening family schedule with a new weekly music
series for BBC1. Across ten themed programmes, followed by a
Christmas special, The Sound of Petula and Petula
Sings Christmas brought her back into primetime with a mix

Critical
Reception:
The Liverpool Echo responded warmly to the opening edition of The Sound of Petula, positioning Petula as a performer who remains hugely popular with British audiences precisely because she avoids overexposure. The reviewer notes that whenever she returns to UK television, she’s welcomed with affection and enthusiasm.
The programme itself is described as an easy, enjoyable mix of light humour, music, and bright choreography,
nothing heavy, nothing controversial, simply well-made Saturday evening entertainment. Petula’s guest, Peter Ustinov, is singled out as a highlight, praised for his character voices, storytelling, and musical contributions, which the reviewer calls “possibly the most original act of the week.”
Overall, the review frames the first episode as charming, unpretentious, and effortlessly watchable, with the critic even wishing the half-hour runtime had been longer - a clear sign of how well the programme landed.

A complete recording of this episode is held within the BBC

Critical
Reception: The
Stage and Television Today highlighted several strong
moments in Dancing on a Saturday Night, noting that Petula was
especially effective in numbers performed simply and directly to
camera, such as Naturally and Somebody Dance with Me. The
“Come Dancing” sequence, complete with Terry Wogan’s
commentary, was praised as an unexpected delight and one of the
programme’s most enjoyable touches. The Norman Maen Dancers
were commended for their energy and enthusiasm, adding pace and
visual interest throughout. Overall, the review suggested that
when the programme played to Petula’s natural strengths, it
delivered engaging and enjoyable Saturday-night entertainment.

All of
the 1974 series and the standalone Christmas special survives in
full. The music performed across these programmes is especially
significant: many songs were never recorded by Petula outside
this setting and can only be found within these broadcasts. The
series also features a string of remarkable one‑off
performances, including “Send In the Clowns” from Stephen
Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, “The Way We
Were” from the 1973 film of the same name, “People” from Funny
Girl, “Touch in the Morning,” and Noël Coward’s
“Mad About the Boy” from the 1932 revue Words and Music.
Throughout the series, Petula
was accompanied by a 32-piece orchestra and singers under the
direction of Peter Knight. We hope you have enjoyed exploring
the listings above and rediscovering the breadth of material
preserved from this series.
