Where
Is Petula Clark's Music? A Study of What's Missing from the
Digital Era
The following, presents the findings of
our comprehensive assessment into the digital availability of Petula's recorded
catalogue in the United Kingdom. This research was conducted by the archivists
here at the Fan Archive Collection.
Although every recording listed here has been issued on CD at some point (having first originally been issued on LP), these releases are now long out of print. As a result, Petula's back catalogue has not transitioned into the digital era in a consistent or comprehensive way. Despite her enduring legacy and decades-spanning discography, a significant portion of her recorded output remains absent from today's streaming and download platforms. This stands in stark contrast to the catalogues of her contemporaries such as Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Marianne Faithfull, and Sandie Shaw, whose core albums and key recordings are widely available across all major digital platforms. Petula's absence is therefore not reflective of her stature or relevance, but of a long-standing gap in catalogue management and digital preservation.
|
This gap was highlighted publicly by The Guardian's 2025 feature,
"Ranked! Petula Clark's Best Songs." In discussing Petula's digital footprint, journalist Alexis Petridis noted that "Clark's late-60s deep cuts are deeper than most – the albums are long out of print, they've evaded streaming and in some cases even YouTube. You could take that as evidence that they're desperately undervalued." Because the list was restricted to tracks available online, numerous important recordings were excluded simply because they have never been made available digitally. For fans, researchers, and archivists, our research serves as a corrective framework: a curated inventory of what is missing, why it matters, and where these recordings originally appeared.
The print edition of The Guardian (pictured right) featured 12 of the 20 selected "Best" songs, whereas the
online version presented the full ranking. |

Our findings indicate that 64% of Petula's album-track catalogue is currently unavailable in the UK, either through physical reissues or digital platforms. The situation is particularly stark in the UK, where the overwhelming majority of her 1960s albums,
the period most associated with her international success, are no longer accessible in any official digital form. Internationally, the situation is even more dire: in several key markets, including Europe and North America, many of these albums have never been made available digitally at all, leaving large portions of her global audience unable to access core parts of her catalogue.
A notable omission in the UK is Petula's 1970 album Memphis, widely regarded by fans and critics as one of her strongest 1970s albums. In the UK, only
three tracks from this album are available digitally; the remainder remain locked away, unheard by new audiences and inaccessible to collectors. It represents a significant gap in her musical legacy.
This listing focuses on Petula's English-language albums, excluding hits compilations. The picture becomes even more incomplete when considering tracks issued solely on singles
and EPs or scattered across various collections.
There is no justifiable reason for this continued absence, particularly given that all of the material has already been digitised for previous CD releases. While the likelihood of new physical reissues is limited, largely due to commercial constraints and a lack of interest from reissue labels, digital availability remains a practical and meaningful path forward.
Methodology
This assessment was undertaken as part of our review of Petula's recorded legacy and its representation on modern digital platforms. The research focused on identifying the current availability of her officially released recordings, with attention to album tracks only.
To establish an accurate picture of the catalogue's digital footprint, we
cross-referenced multiple sources, including historical discographies, label release schedules,
out-of-print CD editions, and current digital platform listings. Although all recordings included in this study have been issued on CD at some point, those physical releases are now unavailable.
This study therefore distinguishes between historical availability (past CD issues) and current accessibility (what can be streamed or downloaded today).
A track was counted as "available" only if it is currently accessible on major digital platforms in an officially licensed form. Grey-market uploads, unauthorised releases, and region-restricted anomalies were excluded.
Using this methodology, the dataset comprises 289 recordings, of which
106 (36.9%) are currently available in digital form. The remaining
183 recordings (63.1%) are unavailable on any official UK digital platform.

Critical Context
The only two 1960s albums currently available in full: In Hollywood and In Other Words, are accessible solely because they have entered the public domain. Their availability does not reflect any active curation, licensing effort, or catalogue management by rights holders.
This assessment provides the clearest picture to date of the digital status of Petula's English-language album catalogue. By examining 25 albums and 289 individual recordings released between 1957 and 1978, we have identified a substantial and ongoing gap in the availability of her work on modern platforms. Despite Petula's cultural impact, chart success, and enduring legacy, 64% of her album-track recordings remain unavailable in any official digital format. The findings are particularly stark for the 1960s, the decade most closely associated with her international prominence. Of the 13 albums issued during this period, only two are currently available, and these survive solely because they have entered the public domain, not through any active preservation or reissue strategy. The remainder, including several landmark albums, are inaccessible to both new listeners and long-time fans.
This absence is not due to lost masters or technical barriers. Every recording in this study has already been digitised for past CD releases, all of which are now out of print. The issue is one of rights management, commercial prioritisation, and a lack of coordinated catalogue stewardship. As a result, a significant portion of Petula's artistic legacy remains effectively hidden from the digital era.
The research presented here is intended as both documentation and advocacy. By identifying what is missing, where it originally appeared, and how much of the catalogue remains unavailable, we aim to support renewed attention to Petula's recorded legacy. Digital release represents the most practical and sustainable path forward, one that benefits fans, researchers, rights holders, and Petula herself.
Until these recordings are restored to circulation, the picture of her career available to the public will remain incomplete. This study underscores the importance of addressing that gap and ensuring that Petula's remarkable body of work is preserved, accessible, and discoverable for generations to come.
Petula currently reaches 845,375 monthly listeners on Spotify, despite having access to only a fraction of her recorded output. With such a limited selection generating this level of engagement, the potential impact of restoring her full catalogue to digital platforms is clear: audience reach, discovery, and cultural visibility would increase dramatically.
